This event led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme and became the first headquarters of an agency of the UN located outside of Europe and North America which was in Nairobi Kenya, East Africa. The first objective of the UNEP was to unveil the term called ‘environmental education’. UNEP established the first International Workshop on Environmental Education. This was held at Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1975. This event led to the first Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education which took place at Tbilisi USSR in 1977. The Tbilisi conference led to the creation of the Tbilisi Principals of Environmental Education. The Tbilisi Principals provided a more clear view of the term Environmental Education and how it should be handled world wide.
