Have women’s rights progressed or regressed in recent years? During this research I found that American women have seen a great number of changes in their opportunities over the years. Although, equality remains unjust and gender discrimination does still exist. Women have gained access to many rights since earning the right to vote in 1920. The 19th Amendment was ratified. The 19th Amendment prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States based on their sex.
Now today women and minorities of age 18 or older have the right to vote. Over the years women’s involvement in the workforce has increased. Before World War 2 women did not work outside of the home. Many male factory owners did not want to hire women workers. They claimed women weren’t fit for difficult, and dangerous factory jobs. The government later launched a campaign, by 1945 more than six million women had war jobs. Women weren’t just working in factories, they were helping keep the country running. Over eleven million women had jobs fixing cars, fighting fires and even working construction.
Women were earning less than men still they were happy doing work. Women gained the right have equal access to jobs in 1968.
