After the 7 Years War, Britain was in severe need of money to support their empire. Thus, they decided turn to their colonies and impose several taxes on them. For example, taxes such as the Stamp Act, the Sugar Act, and the Mutiny Act were forced upon the Americans. The stamp act in particular was a tax that required all printed materials in the colonies to be produced on stamped paper produced in London which had an embossed stamp. The Americans did not take this well as they were previously in a state of salutary neglect. This means that they were relatively free from the British’s control before 1763. Thus, they did not appreciate Britain’s sudden interest in them just to pay off their debts.
